River Dynamics 101
In January 2012, PRWC invited town employees, volunteer municipal commissioners, and residents to attend an evening seminar covering the basics of River Dynamics. Leading the seminar was Jim MacBroom, Professional Engineer and Senior Vice President of Milone and MacBroom, Inc., an environmental consulting firm in Chesire, CT.
Mr. MacBroom is a nationally recognized leader in the field of water resource engineering. He received both a BS and an MS in Civil Engineering University of Connecticut and has continued to expand his education throughout his more than 35 year career. He has published numerous technical papers on hydraulics and applied fluvial morphology, teaches graduate level classes at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Science and serves on numerous advisory boards. His professional experience focuses on river restoration, dam removal, fish passage, and sustainable flood management.
Tailored to the Pomperaug River, its tributaries, and its surrounding watershed, Mr. MacBroom covered topics ranging from river channel formation and changes, land use implications, preciptation and climatic changes, floodplain functions, and much, much more.

Video of this seminar will be coming soon.
Many of the examples Mr. MacBroom alluded to in his presentation were sites featured during our September 2011 Watershed Field Tour. Some of these are scientific research locations; some have damage resulting from the recent floods; and some are representative of common impairments observed throughout the watershed or of the unique characteristics of the watershed.
