Although many of the current research projects are still in early phases, some preliminary results have been presented
and other water issues and concerns have surfaced. Moving through the process as illustrated in Figure 1, the Coalition
staff in consultation with the researchers and others has evaluated the findings. The Coalition objectives for 2005-2007
are to:
- Continue to maintain a strong organization with:
- Stability of leadership
- Increased individual memberships and local interest
- Sufficient funding
- Appropriate peer review
- Obtain acceptance by Bethlehem, Woodbury, and Southbury (83 % of the area) for adopting a comprehensive water
resources management plan that incorporates the CT DEP Aquifer Protection Area regulatory program and insures:
- Effective protection of the aquifer
- Surface and ground-water monitoring
- Procedures for state-wide allocation of water resources and permits
- Establish the Coalition as a leading institution for applied watershed research.
The Coalition has identified and prioritized the tasks necessary to meet the above objectives. A complete listing
and expected timeline for their completion are presented in the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition - Strategic Plan
2005-2007 (see Appendix V).
Action Items to improve the health of the river system have been developed based on the research findings; they
take into consideration the above objectives of feasibility/community support, adequate available funding, and
appropriate staffing.
