River Ramblers Series Continues

The Pomperaug River Water Coalition will continue its series of Sunday afternoon hikes that began in June during Connecticut Trails Day Weekend with a hike to Nonnewaug Falls. Each hike in the “River Ramblers” series invites people to explore a variety of public lands along the river to observe habitat and wildlife and to see different river processes in action. During these outings, we will also provide an overview of river processes and take a brief look at the cultural and geological history unique to each site.

“We’re really lucky to have such a beautiful and accessible resource and I think it’s important for all of us to be aware of the issues surrounding the watershed, to learn how to be good river stewards, and to simply appreciate the river”, says Josephine Purdy, PRWCs 2017 intern.“As the Dr. Marc J. Taylor intern, I am looking forwards to continuing Dr. Taylor’s mantra: show people the river.”

The next hike, a flat 1.25 mile walk around Transylvania Pond, will take place on Sunday July 23rd, from 3:00-5:30 pm. Participants should meet at Janie Pierce Park, 200 Transylvania Rd, Southbury.

Transylvania Pond is the headwater of Hesseky Brook, which historically bore the Pomperaug River name. Hesseky Brook flows north, a unique occurrence within the watershed. Participants will learn about the history of the park, current issues surrounding the pond, and what steps we can all take to be good river stewards.

River Ramblers is a FREE program, but pre-registration is appreciated, either through email at info@pomperaug.org or phone at 203-263-0076. Please dress for outside, wear sturdy shoes, bring water and snacks, and be prepared for nuisance bugs. Sunday programs are rain or shine (thunderstorms will cancel).
