Stream Flow Classifications for the Housatonic

Stream Flow Classifications

In September, PRWC submitted comments on draft stream classifications for the Pomperaug basin. This state-wide process, as administered by CT DEEP, provides for stream segment ratings based on their degree of flow from natural to altered flows. In reviewing the streams classifications, our overall goal was to argue for as many streams as the DEEP designation approach would allow for to be classified as natural or free flowing. While we found DEEP’s work to be very well done, we have challenged their conclusions for 25 stream segments. We await DEEP’s response to our submittal. The Stream Flow Classifications are an important component in the endeavor to update standards for maintaining minimum flows in rivers and streams to balance river and stream ecology, wildlife and recreation while providing for public health, flood control, industry, public utilities, water supply, public safety, agriculture and other lawful uses of water. Please know that you may contact us for information and you may visit the CT DEEP site for a closer review of the proposed classifications.
