Flooding Across Our Watershed Community

PRWC staff have been out across the watershed this week surveying the impacts of the recent storm and flooding on our landscape, businesses, and homes, and speaking with affected community members and emergency personnel. As residents of our watershed have seen, many roads and driveways have been washed out or significantly undermined resulting in safety hazards and difficulty navigating. Piles of debris remain where flood waters have receded, and many have experienced damage to or loss of property. Our hearts ache for those that have lost their homes and loved ones in this devastating event.

The storm cell which stalled over us Sunday (8/18/24) dropped a record amount of rain for our watershed (7-10+ inches in less than 12 hours). The preliminary reading at the US Geological Survey gage in Southbury has us tied for the 3rd highest flow on the Pomperaug River at 15.92 feet, matching the flow in the spring 1987 storm. The second highest flow was recorded in March 2011 and the highest in the flood of 1955.

We would like to offer our ongoing thanks to our emergency services personnel, Dept. of Transportation and Dept. of Public Works crews, and water and power utility folks making repairs and flagging hazards to keep the rest of us safe. We would also like to recognize our municipal, state, and federal representatives for keeping us informed of the situation and coordinating response. Please be kind to them, follow their guidance, and thank them for their service.

Below are resources for those affected by the recent storm and flooding and for those looking to offer assistance to those who have been affected. As a watershed community, we can help each other through these difficult times.
