Get Outside DIY-style for Connecticut Trails Day Weekend June 6-7

For the past several year, PRWC has a led a "river ramble" for Connecticut Trails Day Weekend held annually during the first full weekend of June under the leadership of Connecticut Forest and Park Association.

This year, we were really looking forward to co-leading a little more ambitious hike (~5 miles!) at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River in Southbury. The route included wonderful features like the overlook where you can see the Pomperaug River and a little bit of Lake Zoar, the Pootatuck Road where Rochambeau marched his troops, zigzag stone walls, loads of birds, and then a mellow walk back to the parking lot following the river where we were going to talk about the large woody debris installations that are helping to improve fish habitat in the lower Pomperaug River.

While we are bummed to not be your tour guide as all of the guided hikes for Trails Day Weekend have been cancelled in response to COVID-19, we do encourage you to get out and do your own hiking, maintain distancing, and look for other options if trail heads are too busy. Audubon Center at Bent of the River, a 700-acre preserve, is just one of the many areas in the watershed to explore this Trails Day. We also encourage you to check out town open space areas and properties managed by our local conservation partners: Southbury Land Trust, Roxbury Land Trust, Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust, Steep Rock Association, Watertown Land Trust, and Bethlehem Land Trust.
